West Jordan UT History
The city of West Jordan, Utah, also happens to be one of the many suburbs of Salt Lake City. The city sits in the Salt Lake Valley at the southwest end and is surrounded by mountains. The name of the city originates from the Jordan River whose western banks are the beginning of the city limits for West Jordan, Ut.

The area was originally settled in the 19th century to provide resources to Salt Lake City as well as military defense. However, over time the Mormons who originally settled the area were joined by more residents and the area continued to grow. Today, this Salt Lake City suburb stands on is own and continues to grow.

The reason the Mormons settled in the area and named the river the Western Jordan was simply because they believed the area was their holy land. The river’s name is taken from the Jordan River in Palestine, which appears throughout the Bible. The city was founded in 1849 or thereabouts. Although growth was slow and steady in West Jordan for a while, once the 1970s hit the area starting really taking off and growing. Now, West Jordan is the 4th largest city in Utah, with projected population growth to 108,000 by 2010.  This year West Jordan will reach a milestone of 100,000 residents.

Growth in the area has been pretty substantial over the past few years. In 2002 only 441 permits for single family homes were issued at an average building price of $122,700. However, that number jumped significantly in 2003 to 1107 permits at an average price of homes for sale of $148,500. Both permits issued and average home prices remained high the next couple years with 742 and 858 new home permits being issued in 2004 and 2005. The average prices for these homes for sale were $152,800 and $152,900 respectively.  Median House value of the 28,312 Households in West Jordan during 2006 was $ 169,300. Currently there are 679 homes for sale in West Jordan Ut.

Education
The local schools include West Jordan High and Copper Hills High, West Hills Middle, Hayden Peak Elementary, West Jordan Middle, Jordan Hills Elementary, Joel P Jensen Middle, and Terra Linda Elementary just to name some of the largest schools.

As far as colleges go there are several nearby for residents to attend. These include the University of Phoenix-Utah campus, Weber State, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley State College, University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, and Utah Valley State College.

Nearby Cities and Transportation
Oquirra, South Jordan, Taylorsville, and Kearns are all less than five miles away. West Valley City, Midvale, Riverton, and Murray are all within 10 miles. As far as transportation goes Interstate 15 runs north/south while Interstate 215 is northeast of the city. The Bangerter Highway runs right through the city. New Bingham Highway, Redwood Road, and Utah State Route 111 are just some of the other highways that service West Jordan, Utah.
