The history of Murray, Utah begins over 100 years ago. Murray is about eight miles from Salt Lake City and was originally known as South Cottonwood. It was renamed in honor of the territorial governor Eli Murray who was in office 1880 – 1886. Murray was settled by individuals moving south from Salt Lake City into the valley. These individuals were involved in agriculture and farming, but the city has now become more suburban. During the Great Depression the area suffered greatly, but then rebounded. Today Murray serves as a leading technological city in the valley and is also a great bedroom community for those working in Salt Lake City.
